Bay City ZIP Code Directory

The Bay City ZIP code directory helps separate a postal route from a city address or a county record. A ZIP can narrow an address check, but it cannot establish who receives mail there or where a municipal line falls. Use the street address, city, and state to confirm the current postal code, then compare that result with the parcel or court record needed for the question at hand. Older papers may use a different postal code than a current delivery address.

Bay City ZIP Code Coverage

Three postal codes matter for a Bay City address search: 48706, 48707, and 48708. They are postal service designations, not municipal districts. The state ZIP map labels Bay City with 48706 and 48708, while 48707 remains important for legacy material and PO Box use. Confirm a full address through USPS before using a code as part of a records search.

Other Bay County codes, including 48611, 48613, 48631, 48634, 48650, 48710, 48732, and 48747, are not Bay City postal codes simply because a service area or mailing line touches the city. Keep the local search focused on 48706, 48707, and 48708 unless USPS verifies another code for the exact address.

The Michigan ZIP map is a useful overview, but it says it is not a legal boundary map and does not match Census ZIP Code Tabulation Areas exactly. The USPS ZIP Lookup supplies the address-level confirmation a broad map cannot give.

Bay City 48707 Realignment

ZIP 48707 is the key local quirk. A USPS Postal Bulletin records that 44 Bay City deliveries moved from 48707 to 48706 on November 5, 2011. That change means an older directory, deed enclosure, or mailing list can show 48707 even though a current address validates as 48706.

The state’s Bay County reference table still includes 48707. That does not make every 48707 entry a present residential delivery route. Treat it as a date-sensitive postal clue. Preserve the code as it appears in historic material, then run the present street address through USPS when a current postal code is needed.

Note: A change in postal code may reflect routing, not a move or a change in legal location.

Bay City USPS Postal Lookup Modes

USPS provides three different lookup modes, and each answers a different question. The postal result is a routing result only. USPS specifically warns that a ZIP result does not confirm that a person or company is at the address. That distinction prevents a Bay City postal reference from being used as an occupancy list.

USPS lookup modeInputUseful result
Address lookupResidential or corporate street address with city and stateChecks the ZIP associated with that mailing address.
City and state lookupCity name and stateLists ZIP codes associated with the postal city.
ZIP lookupA five-digit postal codeLists cities served by that postal code.

A ZIP+4 adds a narrower delivery segment to the five-digit ZIP. It helps mail routing, but it is not a public roster. Use it only when USPS returns it for the precise address.

Bay City Postal Search Workflow

A ZIP can organize a search, but Bay County’s public systems do not supply a universal ZIP-to-name search. Work from the exact address and a record type. USPS verifies the postal code, FetchGIS locates the parcel, and election requests use jurisdiction and permitted fields rather than a public web ZIP box. Each step keeps postal evidence separate from a resident claim.

  1. Enter the complete street address, Bay City, and Michigan in the USPS lookup to verify the current postal code.
  2. Use the city and state mode to compare the three Bay City postal codes when only the city is known.
  3. Search the same address or owner in FetchGIS for the parcel, PIN, and property-address context.
  4. For public voter-file data, make a lawful QVF request by the available jurisdiction or list criteria and expect redactions and ACP handling.
  5. When the question becomes address-by-address rather than postal, use the Bay City street directory for the street-level record route.

Do not claim that BS&A supports a ZIP filter. The county links its property-tax query, but the live interface was blocked during research and no verified ZIP-field inventory was captured.

Bay City Postal Map Limits

FetchGIS is valuable after a ZIP has been verified, not before. Its accessible search modes are parcel or PIN, owner name, street address, intersection, and coordinate. No verified ZIP field appeared in the inspected viewer. Search the address or owner, then compare the returned parcel location and property address with the USPS result.

FetchGIS also distinguishes property and owner-address information in its report. The county describes the mapping data as informational, not a legal survey or official county record. That is why a parcel report may help identify a PIN and legal description, while the Register of Deeds remains the source for the recorded document trail. A parcel/PIN search uses a 14-digit parcel number in the county training material. Its report can show tax description, land and building fields, and other map information, but the ZIP is still a comparison field, not the viewer’s main key.

Note: Use the parcel’s address to compare postal routing, not as proof that FetchGIS filters records by ZIP.

Bay City ZIP Address Types

Three address ideas are easy to mix up in a Bay City postal record. A situs address is the property’s physical location. A mailing address is where a tax notice is sent. A postal address is the address and ZIP used for mail delivery. One record can show all three, and they may not match. A mailing address outside Bay City does not by itself change the property’s location.

ZIP and ZIP+4
The five-digit ZIP directs mail to a broad postal area. ZIP+4 adds a more specific routing segment for an address or delivery point.
PO Box ZIP
A code used for post-office boxes or legacy postal handling; it should not be assumed to map to street delivery.
Unique ZIP
A ZIP assigned to one organization or large receiver. No Bay City unique ZIP was identified in the research.
Carrier route
A postal delivery sequence within a ZIP area, not a municipal boundary or a public list of recipients.

Bay City Public Works illustrates the distinction: its physical address is 1645 Marquette Avenue with 48706, while its mailing address is Bay City 48708. The example does not signal conflicting jurisdiction. It shows that physical, mailing, and postal fields can serve different purposes.

Bay City ZIP Numbers and Boundaries

ZIP routes do not follow Bay City city limits. A surrounding township can use a Bay City mailing name or ZIP, and a city address can use 48706 or 48708 depending on its delivery route. The municipal boundary, postal-city line, parcel jurisdiction, and Census ZCTA are separate geographies. Verify the actual parcel and the postal address rather than assuming that a Bay City ZIP proves city residency.

Postal boundary check. Use a ZIP to confirm how mail is routed, then use the parcel, legal description, or city jurisdiction record to establish where the property is located.

No official Bay City population or voter-registration total was located for each ZIP. The Census QuickFacts population of 32,661 is citywide for 2020, not a count for 48706, 48707, or 48708. Bay County’s 2020 population was 103,856, another reason a postal area should not be read as a city population slice. The comparison is especially important around postal-city names: service areas and mailing labels can overlap where the city’s legal authority, tax record, or election jurisdiction does not.

Bay City ZIP History Searches

Modern ZIP codes do not organize older Bay City directory entries or deed descriptions. For a 1900 address, search the street or predecessor place name, directory year, and legal description rather than applying today’s postal code. Local sources can use Lower Saginaw, West Bay City, Wenona, Portsmouth, or Salzburg as place names. Bay County history says Lower Saginaw changed to Bay City by legislative enactment in 1857.

Historical addresses can also be bridged through Polk street lists, Sanborn map labels, city plats, current GIS, and recorded legal descriptions. A historic address with 48707 should be preserved as printed; it should not be silently rewritten as 48706. The date, document type, and street name are often more revealing than a later postal code. A 48706 or 48708 result today can be noted alongside the older notation, but the two should not be treated as identical evidence. When a street number changes or a place name disappears, compare the legal description and map context before deciding the records refer to one parcel.

Note: A historic ZIP is a date marker for mail, not a substitute for a street, plat, or legal description.

Bay City Postal Record Caution

The Bay County Clerk and state Bureau of Elections maintain Qualified Voter File material, but QVF is not a public web ZIP search. A written request can specify a jurisdiction or list data and may contain public fields allowed by Michigan law, while sensitive fields and ACP applications remain withheld. Postal data cannot fill those gaps or confirm that a particular person receives mail at an address.

QVF public list fields can include a complete name, residential address, available mailing address, year of birth, registration date, status, voter ID, and requested voter history. Month and day of birth, phone, email, signature, driver or state-ID number, and Social Security number fragment are redacted. The Bureau’s request instructions provide electronic data through encrypted flash drive or arranged FTP, not ordinary email delivery.

For a narrow government record that does not have its own release process, Bay County accepts written requests through its FOIA portal, by email, mail, or in person. Michigan FOIA generally requires a five-business-day response, with one possible ten-business-day extension. Court records and vital records use their own custodial procedures, and a USPS lookup does not change those limits.
